Steps to Take When Involved in a Car Accident

Getting involved in a car accident can be a traumatic and stressful experience.

Unfortunately, accidents can happen to anyone, at any time, and in any place.

It is crucial to be prepared and know what to do in case of a car accident, not only to ensure your safety but also the safety of others involved in the accident.

This blog post will guide you on what to do if you get caught in a car accident, building on our previous road safety blog about taking care of drivers in the event of a crash.

Before the Accident

The best way to prepare for a car accident is to be proactive. Here are steps you can take to be safe and prepared ahead of an accident occurring:

  1. Ensure Necessary Documentation: Keep a valid driver’s license, car insurance, valid MOT, and registration in your car.
  2. Maintain Your Vehicle: Ensure your car is in good working condition, with all lights, brakes, and tires functioning correctly.
  3. Wear Seatbelts: Always wear your seatbelt and ensure that your passengers do the same.
  4. Avoid Distracted Driving: Avoid texting or using your phone while driving, which is both illegal and increases the likelihood of an accident.

During the Accident

  1. Stay Calm and Stop: Turn off your car engine and never drive away from the scene, no matter how minor the crash is. Check for injuries on yourself and passengers. Get medical help if there are injuries.
  2. Move to a Safe Location: If possible, move to the side of the road or a path away from traffic flow. Turn on hazard lights or use a reflective triangle if you have one.
  3. Exchange Information: Exchange information with the other driver, including name, phone number, license plate number, and insurance information. Do not admit liability or apologize for the accident, as this may be used against you in legal proceedings.

After the Accident

  1. Seek Medical Attention: Even if you feel fine, some injuries may not be immediately apparent, and delaying treatment can lead to complications.
  2. Protect the Scene: Use hazard lights and a safety triangle (approximately 150 meters from the accident scene) to warn other drivers of stationary vehicles ahead.
  3. Notify Your Insurance Company: Inform your insurer of the accident and provide all necessary information.
  4. Call the Police: Always call the police, regardless of how minor the accident is. The police will fill out a report required by the insurer when you file a claim. If the police cannot come to the scene, go to the police station and fill out the report yourself.
  5. Exchange Information: Get the other party’s name, contact number, driver’s license number, car license plate number, car type, color, and model, location of the accident, insurance company, and policy number.
  6. Document the Accident: Gather information from the scene, including the name and badge number of the responding police officer. Make a copy of the police report. Take pictures of the vehicles from different angles, showing the damage done. Also, take pictures of the other car’s license plate. Get names and contact information of all parties involved and any witnesses.
  7. Contact Your Insurer: Inform your insurer immediately about the accident. Explain the facts and the extent of your injuries, if any. Your insurance agent will guide you on what is needed to process your claim.
  8. See Your Doctor: Visit your doctor even if you feel fine, as some injuries may become apparent only after a day or two. Injuries resulting from a crash are usually included in your auto insurance claim, so it’s important to document any physical harm stemming from the accident.
  9. Be Proactive: It’s easier to remain calm after an accident when you’re prepared. Download your insurance company’s app or forms that guide you through the insurance claim process. Keep your registration, proof of insurance card, contact information, and a list of key things you need to remember at the scene of an accident in your car.
